[Football] Wynn Scores Twice; Football Falls at DWU

Doane Football traveled to Mitchell, S.D., to battle Dakota Wesleyan on Saturday afternoon. The home squad used a strong defensive effort to down Doane, 17-13.The first quarter was scoreless until the final second. Doane was forced to punt deep in their own territory and DWU was able to block the attempt. The ball was recovered in the back of the end zone by Jaden Bloemenda for a touchdown.Midway through the second quarter Doane was able to tie the game as Frazzie Wynn (JR/Lincoln, Neb.) broke free for a 56-yard touchdown run and the extra point evened the score at 7-7. The run was set up by a fourth down conversion by the Tigers on a fake punt deep in their own end as Mason Krause (SR/Lyndon, Kan.) raced 18-yards for a first down. DWU drove the field late in the court, however, the Doane defense held strong inside the 5-yard line and forced a field goal attempt. DWU missed the 28-yard attempt and the score remained tied heading into halftime.Dakota Wesleyan regained the lead in the third quarter as they took the opening drive and used 6:30 of the clock, coming away with a 27-yard field goal. Doane was held to one possession in the quarter, a three-and-out. DWU took the next drive into the fourth quarter where they extended their lead with a six-yard touchdown pass to go up 17-7.Late in the game, Doane scored the final points of the game as Zach Witters (SR/Lenexa, Kan.) found Wynn for an 11-yard touchdown pass. The extra point was missed, leaving Doane down by four points. The on-side kick was recovered by DWU and they ran out the clock to clinch the win.Doane finished the game with 177 yards in total offense, 107 coming on the ground. Wynn led the Tiger ground attack with 75 yards. Witters completed six passes for 60 yards while Vaughn Martinez (FR/San Antonio, Texas) completed two passes for 10 yards. Izaiah Celestine (SR/Stockton, Calif.) led Doane with two catches for 27 yards while Andre Norman (SO/Littleton, Colo.) had three receptions for 21 yards.Cooper Bates (SR/Wilber, Neb.) and Ty Barbazon (JR/Ocala, Fla.) led Doane with 10 tackles apiece. Barbazon had a team-high 2.5 tackles for loss. Cedric Gooch Jr. (SR/Wylie, Texas) added nine tackles and a team-high six solo tackles.Doane will return for a home contest on Saturday, October 16, when they host Hastings in the longest running rivalry in the state. The two teams will be meeting for the 120th time.
