[Football] Southwestern Pulls Away in Second Half for 28-12 win over Football Falcons

Winfield, Kan. – Two touchdowns early in the second half proved to be enough for the Southwestern College Moundbuilders to hang on for a 28-12 today (Oct. 26) over the Friends University Falcons in Winfield, Kan.Drake Damon (JR/Goddard, Kan. ) and the Falcon defensive unit helped the Falcons stay close throughout the first half, as Damon picked off a pass before blocking a punt for a safety late in the second quarter that trimmed the Builder lead down to 14-9.Coming off the safety, quarterback Javonte Stewart completed passes of 11 yards to Michael Evans (JR/Inglewood, Calif.) and 16 yards to Tyson Love (JR/Wichita, Kan. ) and also had a 10 yard run to set up a 33 yard field goal by Nick Navarro (SO/Wichita, Kan. ) to make it a two-point game at the half.But the Builders exploded to start the second half to gain separation, starting with an 84 yard touchdown run by Keyshawn Wyatt just 19 seconds into the third quarter.After holding the Falcons on fourth and one, the Builders got a 33 yard touchdown pass from Yizalle Whifield to Brooks Shannon to push the lead to 16 points.With the Builders holding a 7-0 lead early in the second quarter, the Falcons pulled even when an interception by Nick White (JR/Covington, Ga. ) led to a four yard score by Stewart that made it 7-7.Following an exchange of punts, the Builders (4-4, 4-3 KCAC)) regained the lead on a 15 yard scoring run by Shannon.Stewart started at quarterback for the Falcons (1-7, 1-7 KCAC) and had 81 yards passing along with a career-best 68 yards on the ground. Dan Dawdy (JR/Haysville, Kan.) also saw game action for the first time since Sept. 28 and threw for 39 yards.Caleb Fink (SO/Wichita, Kan. ) led the Falcon receivers with five catches for 37 yards.Wyatt fueled the Builders' attack with 163 rushing yards overall, while Shannon had a pair of catches for 36 yards.David Akao (SO/Wichita, Kan.) led the Falcon defense with eight tackles and Jeremiah Pharms (SR/Stockton, Calif. ) recorded 2.5 tackles for loss.The Falcons will next host Bethany College for Senior Day Saturday (Nov. 2) at 1:30 pm at Adair-Austin Stadium.
