[Football] Fourth Quarter Efforts Lift Football Past Jamestown

Doane Football rallied in the final seconds on Saturday in their Homecoming contest against Jamestown to post a 28-21 victory. The win moved the Tigers to 4-1 in the GPAC and 4-3 overall.The Jimmies used ball control on the offensive side and a tough front seven on the defensive side to own the majority of the first half of play. Jamestown recorded 169 yards of offense in the first half while holding Doane to 81 yards, including minus-four yards rushing. Ball control was in the Jimmies favor, 19:48 to 10:12.The first score of the game came off a 12-play, 91-yard march by Jamestown in the 1st quarter. Garrett Mitchell scored on a nine-yard run to cap off the drive. On the Jimmies next possession, they closed out the opening quarter and ran an addition five minutes off the clock in the 2nd quarter before crossing the end line. On fourth-and-goal, Jordan Mann scored on a quarterback sneak for a 14-0 lead.Doane was able to get on the board with 1:27 to play in the 2nd quarter. Jamestown committed two 15-yard penalties to aid the Tiger drive and on 3-and-11, Drake Davidson (JR/Moberly, Mo.) escaped pressure and found Levi Sudbeck (SR/Hadar, Neb.) for a 24-yard touchdown strike. Doane trailed 14-7 at the break.The 3rd quarter was relatively quiet with the teams combining for 96 total yards of offense. Doane posted 58 yards, however, the run game was held to minus-three in the quarter and stood at minus-seven for the game.The quarter ended on a high note as Jamestown was forced to punt and Izaiah Celestine (JR/Stockton, Calif.) returned the ball 35 yards and into Jimmie territory to start the 4th quarter. Davidson ran for 11 yards and completed back-to-back passes for 18 yards to Adam Wasserman (FR/Fairbury, Neb.) and 11 yards to Celestine to put the Tigers in the end zone to tie the game. Celestine's catch was for the Tiger score.Each team followed with a pair of three-and-outs before Jamestown regained the lead on a third down conversion. Jamestown was a combined 8-of-16 on 3rd and 4th down plays in the game. Mann hit Barry Williams Jr. for a 55-yard wide open pass as the Tiger defense lost Williams down the sideline. The play put the Jimmies in front 21-14 with 6:13 to play.Doane started at their 40-yard line on the next drive and marched 60 yards on five plays to tie the game at 21. Davidson hit Celestine for a 33-yard pass on the first play and Wasserman for 9 yards on the second play of the drive. Jamaine Derogene (JR/Dunedin, Florida) posted a four-yard run for a first down which was followed by a Davidson to Sudbeck 14-yard pass to tie the game.On the next Jimmie possession, Wyatt Bodfield (JR/Crete, Neb.) came up with a five-yard sack on third down to force a Jamestown punt. With the Jimmies trying to avoid a punt that Celestine could return, Doane was set-up at midfield following a 30-yard punt.Doane picked up seven yards on their first two plays and needed a 3rd down conversion to extend the offensive drive. The Tigers were 6-of-13 on 3rd down for the game with two of their conversions coming on the game-winning drive. Following a Tiger timeout, Davidson found Celestine for 15 yards. The duo connected on the next play for 16 yards to take the Tigers to the 14-yard line. After an incompletion, Derogene rushed for six yards to put the Tigers at the 8-yard line. Doane looked poised to set-up a game-winning field goal attempt, however, on 3rd-and-4 Derogene was able to find a hole on the right side of the line and broke through for an 8-yard game-winner.Doane's offense broke out in the final quarter, out-scoring Jamestown 21-7. The offense posted 147 yards while the defense held the Jimmies to 66 yards in the final quarter (55 yards came on the touchdown play). For the game, Doane ended up with 286 yards of offense while Jamestown finished with 273 yards.Davidson threw for 268 yards and three touchdowns on 21 completions. Celestine finished with a game-high 109 yards receiving on six catches. Sudbeck posted 82 yards on five receptions to go with two scores. Derogene led the Tigers with 30 rushing yards on 11 carries.The Doane defense received a team-high 10 tackles from Connor O'Toole (SR/Wilber, Neb.). Garrett Fries (SR/Indianola, Neb.), Riley Homolka (JR/Wilber, Neb.), and Anthony Malone (SR/Centennial, Colo.) were in on eight tackles apiece and Ryan Schuster (SR/Ashland, Neb.) added seven.The Tigers recorded five sacks and 10 tackles for loss in the game. Homolka recorded two sacks and 3.5 tackles for loss. Bodfield had two sacks as well.Next up for the Tigers will be another home game on Saturday, October 19, when Dordt University makes their way to Crete for a 1:00 PM kickoff.
