[Football] Football Wins First Meeting with Mount Marty

Doane Football took on Mount Marty for the first time as the Lancers are in their inaugural season. Doane used a strong defensive effort to set up the offense in a 28-7 victory to improve to 4-4 on the season.The Lancers took a chance on their opening drive, trying to convert on fourth down in their own territory. Riley Homolka (SR/Wilber, Neb.) came up with a tackle behind the line of scrimmage to give the Tiger offense the ball. On the first play, Vaughn Martinez (FR/San Antonio, Texas) hit Darnell Riley (FR/San Antonio, Texas) for a 32-yard touchdown pass.Mount Marty pushed the ball into Doane territory on their next drive, however, back-to-back sacks including one by Joaquim Robinson (SR/Kearney, Neb.) on fourth down gave the offense the ball near midfield. The Tigers then alternated a run by Frazzie Wynn (JR/Lincoln, Neb.) and a pass completion by Martinez as they drove down the field. The drive was capped by a Wynn 2-yard touchdown.The teams were scoreless in the 2nd quarter of play and Doane led 14-0 at the break. The Tigers opened the second half with the ball and drove the field, covering 80 yards on six plays. Martinez completed a 39-yard pass to Chandler Cooper (JR/Rockmart, Ga.) on third down to move into Lancer territory. Wynn followed with three consecutive runs, capped by a 23-yard run to the end zone for a 21-0 lead.In the 4th quarter, Mount Marty was able to get on the scoreboard with a three-yard touchdown pass. Doane capped the scoring in the final minutes as a Ryan Michael (JR/Brea, Calif.)s interception gave the Tigers a short field. Lj Butler (FR/San Antonio, Texas) rushed for a 15-yard touchdown to give the Tigers a 28-7 win in their final home game of the season.Wynn led the Tigers with 87 yards on the ground and two touchdowns. Butler added 71 yards and one score. Martinez completed 14-of-19 passes for 159 yards and one touchdown. Riley had four receptions for 61 yards and a touchdown while Jeremiah Payne (SO/Dallas, Texas) had four receptions for 46 yards.Defensively, the Tigers had 19 tackles for loss and nine sacks in the game. Cedric Gooch Jr. (SR/Wylie, Texas) posted a team-high nine tackles. Ty Barbazon (JR/Ocala, Fla.) posted eight tackles with 4.5 tackles for loss and 3.5 sacks. Ryan Lasauskas (SR/Omaha, Neb.) added eight tackles with Mason Krause (SR/Lyndon, Kan.), Riley Heithoff (SR/Raymond, Neb.), and Michael finishing with seven tackles apiece.Next up for Doane will be a trip to Fremont to take on Midland at 1 PM on October 30.
