[Football] Football Races Past Jamestown on Homecoming

 Doane Football hosted Jamestown for Homecoming on Saturday afternoon in Crete. The Tigers found the perfect balance of offense and defense as they rolled past the Jimmies, 44-20. Doane rolled up 460 yards of total offense while limiting Jamestown to 231 yards, 19 on the ground.After a scoreless first quarter, the Tigers struck in the opening seconds of the second quarter as Vaughn Martinez (FR/San Antonio, Texas) found Andre Norman (SO/Littleton, Colo.) for a 27-yard touchdown strike. It was Norman's first collegiate touchdown reception.The Tigers added to their lead as the defense found the scoreboard when Mason Krause (SR/Lyndon, Kan.) picked off a pass on a deflection and raced 30 yards to the end zone. Doane added to the lead with a 32-yard field goal by Jeremy Henning (SR/Highlands Ranch, Colo.). Jamestown scored with 49 seconds left in the half and Doane went into the break with a 17-7 lead.Jamestown cut into the lead in the 3rd quarter after forcing a Doane turnover. Riley Homolka (SR/Wilber, Neb.) blocked the extra point attempt, leaving the Tigers with a 17-13 lead. The Tigers took their next drive and used 12 plays to cover 69 yards for a touchdown. Martinez scored from one-yard out for his first career rushing score. The Tigers took possession of the ball at their own two-yard line late in the 3rd quarter as Damond Brown (SR/Phoenix, Ariz.) intercepted a Jamestown pass attempt. Doane used the next 4:19 to drive 98 yards down the field. The drive was capped early in the 4th quarter on a one-yard sneak by Martinez to put the Tigers up 30-13.Midway into the 4th, Martinez hit Jeremiah Payne (SO/Dallas, Texas) for a 25-yard pitch and catch. The Tigers had the short field after a Ty Barbazon (JR/Ocala, Fla.) and Mason Krause sack on fourth down left Doane with 38 yards to go for the score.Late in the quarter, Lj Butler (FR/San Antonio, Texas) scored the final Tiger touchdown as he punched the ball into the end zone from three yards out for his first collegiate touchdown. Doane led 44-13 before Jamestown scored in the final minute to cap the scoring.Butler led the Tigers with 111 rushing yards on 17 carries while Frazzie Wynn (JR/Lincoln, Neb.) added 107 yards on 21 carries. Doane had 61 rushing attempts for 271 yards. Martinez completed 12 passes for 189 yards and two touchdowns. Adam Wasserman (JR/Fairbury, Neb.) was the top target with five receptions while Izaiah Celestine (SR/Stockton, Calif.) led the team with 77 receiving yards, including a 62-yard reception on Doane's 98-yard drive.Riley Heithoff (SR/Raymond, Neb.) led the Tigers with eight tackles, five tackles for loss, and three sacks. Krause added seven tackles, one tackle for loss, and an interception for a touchdown. Cooper Bates (SR/Wilber, Neb.) added five tackles and had an interception on the final Jamestown play of the game.Doane had 12 tackles for loss as a team and five sacks to go with three interceptions and two fourth down stops defensively.The Tigers will take to the road next week when they travel to Mitchell, S.D., to take on Dakota Wesleyan on October 9.
