[Football] Football Falcons Tripped Up at Kansas Wesleyan in Season Opener

Salina, Kan. – The two-time defending KCAC regular season champion Kansas Wesleyan University Coyotes defeated the Friends University Falcons 70-17 in the regular season opener and non-conference  game for both teams tonight (Sept. 12) in Salina, Kan.Trailing 14-0 late in the opening quarter, Dawson Marcum (SO/Durango, Colo.) found the end zone from three yards out to put the Falcons on the board with 2:28 left.The Coyotes kept their foot on the gas offensively, scoring on their next possession when Isaiah Randalle hit Stevie Williams for a touchdown with 11:37 left in the second quarter to stretch the lead back to two scores.After a botched punt gave the Coyotes possession at the Falcon four yard line, a rushing score by Quincy Sandoval put the Coyotes up by a commanding count of 28-7.On their last possession of the first half, Dan Dawdy (SR/Haysville, Kan.) found Kieran Wright-Blue (FR/Garland, Texas) for a 35 yard completion on third and five to set up a 24 yard field goal by Bobby Schmidt (JR/Sapulpa, Okla. ) to bring the Falcons within 28-10 at halftime.The Coyotes wasted no time maintaining control, scoring on a 59 yard touchdown pass from Randalle to Eren Jenkins on the first possession of the second half and then getting an 80 yard punt return for a touchdown by Drevon Macon to quickly expand the lead to 42-10.With the KWU lead up to 56-10 early in the fourth quarter, the Falcons managed to score one more time when Dawdy hit Waylon Chance (SO/Valley Center, Kan.) for a 43 yard score with 13:56 left in the game.Dawdy threw for 191 yards and one touchdown for the Falcons (0-1), with Chance hauling in five catches for 83 yards and the one score. In his first career outing, Kevin Green (FR/Waxahachie, Texas) also had five receptions for 28 yards.Marcum led the Falcons' rushing attack with 64 yards and one touchdown, while Juan Salazar (SR/Vernon, Texas) ran for 59 yards and Laken Clowdus (FR/Bartlesville, Okla. ) had 40 yards on the ground.Randalle finished with 213 yards along with two touchdowns and one interception for KWU and Williams recorded a game-high 105 receiving yards and one score.Jason Weah (JR/Madison, Wis. ) led the Falcons with a game and career-high 10 tackles, with David Akao (JR/Wichita, Kan.) registering nine stops. Robert Garcia (SR/Wichita, Kan.) had eight tackles and also forced and recovered a fumble. Christian Ryan (SR/Grapevine, Texas) had an interception for the Falcons.The Coyotes (1-0) got a team-high nine tackles from both Justin Sullivan and Zyair Velazquez.The Falcons will be at Tabor College next Saturday night (Sept. 19) at 7 pm in Hillsboro, Kan. before welcoming Avila University to Wichita for their home opener on Sept. 26, also at 7 pm.
