[Football] Derogene Scores from 56 Yards; Tigers Fall in Opener

Doane Football opened the 2020 season on Saturday with a night game against Concordia. The Tigers struck first, however, the Bulldogs came away with a 24-7 win on Doane's home turf. For Concordia, it was their second win in the last 15 meetings.Each team opened the game with a three-and-out. On Doane's second possession, they had only one play and it resulted in six points. Jamaine Derogene (SR/Dunedin, Florida) raced 56 yards to the end zone for the first score of the season.Doane was held without a first down on their next five possessions as the Bulldogs were able to score 21 unanswered points. The Tigers appeared to be in position to strike before halftime as they moved into Concordia territory with three minutes left in the 2nd quarter. However, two deadball penalties pushed Doane back 20 yards and the Tigers fumbled on their next play to set up the Bulldogs for a field goal before halftime.The second half was a scoreless battle. For the game, Concordia finished with 374 yards of total offense while Doane ended with 195. The Bulldogs rushed for 229 yards to the Tigers' 118.Derogene led Doane with 80 rushing yards on nine carries. Drake Davidson (SR/Moberly, Mo.) threw for 65 yards on 12 completions. Josh Baker (SR/Omaha, Neb.) was the top receiver with three catches and 19 yards.Defensively, Donte Wiggins posted 11 tackles on the day with Riley Heitoff and Mason Krause (JR/Lyndon, Kan.) in on 10 tackles apiece. Doane collected eight tackles behind the line of scrimmage.Concordia received 169 yards rushing and two touchdowns from Jonah Weyand. Blake Culbert threw for 145 yards on 15 completions with Cayden Beran his top target at five receptions for 36 yards.Lane Napier led the Bulldog defense with seven tackles and Logan Kreizel added six. Concordia recorded two tackles behind the line of scrimmage, both sacks.Doane will be back on the field on Saturday, September 19, when they host Briar Cliff in Crete at 1:00 PM.
