Former ESU Defensive Backs Coach Brent Pry Named Head Coach at Virginia Tech

Virginia Tech announced on Tuesday that former East Stroudsburg University football outside linebacker and defensive backs coach Brent Pry was named head coach for the Hokies.

Pry previously served as the defensive coordinator on James Franklin's (ESU '95) staff at Penn State since 2014. Pry helped the Nittany Lions to a top-25 total defense in four seasons and led PSU to seventh in scoring defense this season, allowing an average of 16.8 points per game.

Prior to coaching in Happy Valley, Pry was a defensive coordinator under Franklin at Vanderbilt (2011-13) and was also a DC at Georgia Southern for a season in 2010. Other stops for the Altoona native include Memphis (Defensive Line, 2007-09), Louisiana-Lafayette (Defensive Coordinator, 2002-06), Western Carolina (1998-01, Defensive Line/Defensive Backs/Special Teams) and previously served as a graduate assistant at Virginia Tech (1995-97).

Pry's postgraduate coaching career began as a graduate assistant under legendary ESU head coach Denny Douds, spending both the 1993 and 1994 seasons in the Poconos. With All-PSAC quarterback and Harlon Hill candidate James Franklin at the helm, ESU posted a 12-7 record in Pry's two seasons at ESU. Longtime ESU Offensive Coordinator Mike Terwilliger served as the ESU Quarterbacks Coach on the staff with Douds and the Prys.
