War Hawks fall short in close matchup with ETBU.

McMurry University lost 14-13 to East Texas Baptist University Saturday, Oct. 14 in Marshall. The War Hawks got into the end zone first with 5:48 left in the first quarter on a 28-yard pass from freshman quarterback Jess Hoel (Abernathy, Texas) to sophomore wide receiver Karmelus Card (El Paso, Texas). Senior Jared Mendoza (Fort Worth, Texas) kicked the extra point. The opponent had back-to-back scores before McMurry responded with Hoel's 38-yard touchdown pass to senior wide receiver Kristopher Martin (El Paso, Texas) at the 5:07 mark in the third quarter. Hoel finished with 26 of 40 passing for 226 yards and 13 rushes for 70 yards. Martin had 11 catches for 141 yards while Card had 3 catches for 25 yards. Defensively, junior linebacker Marshall Tovar (Willow Park, Texas) had 11 tackles (7 solo, 4 assisted) including 3 solo for loss of 6 yards, 1 solo sack for loss of 3 yards and 1 quarterback hurry; junior linebacker Herman Lee (Prosper, Texas) had 8 assisted tackles; junior defensive back Timothy Leatherman (Ingram, Texas) had 8 tackles (2 solo, 6 assisted) and 1 pass breakup; senior defensive back Christopher Baker (Arlington, Texas) had 7 tackles (4 solo, 3 assisted) and 3 pass breakups; junior defensive back Damon Dozier Jr. (Royse City, Texas) had 6 tackles (2 solo, 4 assisted) and 1 pass breakup; freshman defensive back Sy Johnson (Houston, Texas) had 6 tackles (2 solo, 4 assisted); senior lineman Markeis Williams (Spring, Texas) had 6 tackles (3 solo, 3 assisted) including 2 solo for loss of 2 yards; sophomore defensive back Kimani Smith (Austin, Texas) had 5 tackles (2 solo, 3 assisted), including 1 assisted for loss of 1 yard and 1 pass breakup. Also, freshman lineman C.J. Kidd (Dallas, Texas) recorded a solo tackle for a 12-yard loss. McMurry, 2-4 overall and 0-3 in the American Southwest Conference, returns to Wilford Moore Stadium Oct. 21 for a 1 p.m. game with Howard Payne University.
