Sam Houston Statue gets outfitted with new Houston Texans jersey

If you're driving up or down Interstate 45 near Huntsville, Texas, it's impossible to ignore the larger-than-life Sam Houston Statue located on the east side of the highway. The iconic Texas landmark, which stands 67 feet tall on a 10-foot base and can be seen from miles away, received a makeover this week in honor of the latest jersey reveal by the NFL's Houston Texans. The organization debuted its new uniforms to the public on Tuesday, with a massive blue Texans jersey appearing on the statue earlier that morning.
Obviously, taking up what appears to be at least 20 vertical feet of space, this was not an official team jersey. A source described it as something similar to a tarp that had been designed to look like one of the Texans' new uniforms and placed on the statue.
The visitors center for the Sam Houston Statue—which was named "A Tribute to Courage" by creator David Adickes, but is frequently referred to as "Big Sam"—is located along Highway 75 in south Huntsville, though the statue itself is easily visible from Interstate 45. Adickes completed the project in 1994, with the Visit Huntsville, TX site claiming that is is "the world's tallest statue of an American hero."
