Oklahoma State-Iowa State Post-Game Quotes – Mike Gundy

Iowa State head coach Matt Campbell

Opening Statement:

"We'll tip our hat to Oklahoma State. They played a good football game. They made some plays when they had the opportunity to make them. We had some opportunities to make some plays and we just didn't. Two really good football teams, you tip your hat to them both. There is a lot of work for us to continue to do."

On areas to improve for Iowa State:

"Efficiency. On defense, there's two plays I think you'd like to have back. We didn't tackle very well. We gave up a couple big plays and kind of let them off the hook. On the offensive side of the ball, again, it comes down to efficiency. We made some big plays and had some opportunities to score and put points on the board and we didn't do that. So we'll evaluate what those things are. It's still really early in the football season when you think about it. We've got to get those things corrected if we want to become the football team we have the ability to become."

On Oklahoma State's defense stifling the passing game:

"Well the first thing is you have to be able to catch it. When you're throwing the ball, you have to be able to catch it. We didn't do that a couple times; that was one issue. The second issue is you've got to give those guys credit. That's a veteran secondary. Of the five secondary players, four of them are juniors and seniors and they've played a ton of football. That looks a little bit deceiving, though, when you have the opportunity to make some catches and you just don't. I'll know more of it when I watch the video."

On the play of Iowa State's defense:

"I think, with our whole team not just the defense, there's moments that are outstanding and there are lulls. For the entirety of the team, you can't have lulls. Offense, defense, special teams, everyone looks exactly the same. We have to iron out our team. If we want to look our best, we have to get rid of the lulls. We had them in every phase of the game today and, unfortunately, those lulls got us."
