[Football] Football Plays First-Ever Game in Texas

Doane Football made their first trip to Texas and took on NCAA Division II No. 5 Tarleton State on Saturday evening. The host Texans played their first game in their newly renovated, $26 million facility, and as at Top 5 team. Tarleton State broke away in the 2nd quarter as they posted a 56-3 win over Doane.A week after scoring on their 2nd play of the game against NCAA Division I Stephen F. Austin, the Texans were held scoreless on their opening possession of the game by the Tigers. Tarleton scored on their next two possessions with rushing touchdowns and led 13-0 after the opening 15 minutes.Doane's first scoring opportunity in the opening quarter was set up by the defense as Dante Wiggins (FR/Colorago Springs, Colo.) intercepted a pass in Texans' territory. The Tigers were able to pick up one first down but was forced to attempt a 51-yard field goal which missed to the left.As the 2nd quarter started, Tarleton was about to scoring on back-to-back drives with passing touchdowns. Doane was pinned deep in their territory following the second touchdown of the quarter and the Texans were able to push the Tigers backwards into an eventual safety.The Texans received the ball following the safety and drove for a touchdown to take a 36-0 lead. On Doane's next possession, they were forced to punt and Tarleton State busted through to block the punt. The Tiger defense held tough inside the red zone and forced TSU to attempt a field goal for a 39-0 lead at the break.Tarleton added a pair of rushing touchdowns in the 3rd quarter and led 53-0 going into the final quarter. The Texans picked up a field goal early in the 4th for their final score. On the following Doane possession, the Tigers used a 42-yard kickoff return by Ramzi Shurman (JR/Aneheim, Calif.) and a TSU penalty to start in Texans' territory. Adam Wasserman (FR/Fairbury, Neb.) picked up a 15-yard run on the first play of the drive. Doane added five more yards on the ground before Bryce Cooney (SR/Omaha, Neb.) drilled a 40-yard field goal. The score for the Tigers extended their streak of games scored in to 100, dating back to 2009.Wasserman led Doane with 26 yards rushing on three carries. Drake Davidson (JR/Moberly, Mo.) threw for 38 yards on eight completions. Jamaine Derogene (JR/Dunedin, Florida) and Kyle Jensen (SR/Exeter, Neb.) had three receptions apiece to lead the Tigers.Defensively, Connor O'Toole (SR/Wilber, Neb.) and Drew Gladney (SO/Rockwall, Texas) led the Tigers with seven tackles apiece. Cooper Bates (SO/Wilber, Neb.) was in on six tackles. Anthony Malone (SR/Centennial, Colo.) led the way with 1.5 tackles for loss.Doane returns to conference play on Saturday, September 21, with a trip to Sioux City to take on Briar Cliff at 1 PM. It will mark the Tigers' first afternoon game of the season.
