[Football] Football Drops Road Battle in Sioux City

Doane Football competed in Sioux City, Iowa, on Saturday as they took on Briar Cliff. The Chargers jumped out early on the Tigers behind their defense and posted a 20-10 win over Doane. The Tigers fell to 1-1 in conference place with the loss.Briar Cliff scored the first points of the game midway through the opening quarter on a 32-yard interception return for a touchdown. Doane closed the quarter with a 22-yard field goal by Bryce Cooney (SR/Omaha, Neb.).The second quarter saw the Chargers put together two scoring drives. The scored a touchdown following a 10-play, 62-yard drive with 10:15 left in the quarter. With 2:14 left, BCU picked up a 23-yard field goal to take a 17-3 lead at the half.Doane opened with possession to start the 3rd quarter. The ball was in the Tigers' hands for nearly 13 of the 15-minute quarter, covering two possessions. On Doane's opening drive, they marched down to the BCU 1-yard line only to have the Charger defense tighten up and hold the Tigers off the scoreboard.Doane's second possession of the 3rd quarter carried into the final quarter and on the first play of the 4th quarter, Adam Wasserman (FR/Fairbury, Neb.) scored from two yards out to pull the Tigers within seven points.Briar Cliff came back on their next possession and picked up a field goal to go back in front, 20-10. Doane had two more possessions in the final quarter, only to amass 11 yards of total offense.The Chargers finished with 259 yards of offense while hold Doane to 181 yards. The Tiger run defense was tough on BCU, limiting the home team to 21 yards of net rushing. Doane finished with 48 yards rushing in the game.Jamaine Derogene (JR/Dunedin, Florida) led Doane with 23 yards rushing while Jacobi White (JR/Grapevine, Texas) added 19. Wasserman threw for 72 yards on 6-of-9 passing. Drake Davidson (JR/Moberly, Mo.) threw for 61 yards on 9-of-18 passing. Josh Baker (JR/Omaha, Neb.) and Brandon Gannon (SR/Grand Island, Neb.) had four receptions apiece, combining for 54 yards receiving.Defensively for the Tigers, Joaquim Robinson (JR/Kearney, Neb.) and Connor O'Toole (SR/Wilber, Neb.) posted seven tackles apiece. Robinson led the team with 3.0 tackles for loss. Anthony Malone (SR/Centennial, Colo.) added six tackles, including 2.5 tackles for loss.Doane returns home for the first time in a month when they take the field again. The Tigers will host Hastings on Saturday, September 28, at 1 PM in Crete.
