URBAN MEYER WILL BURN OUT AS GATORS COACH?

Florida pres says he expects that could happen.... pull a Dick Vermeil so to speak. More on this on the site here.

http://footballpedia.com/vbbs/showthread.php?t=1761

Add to this, the LA Times says here that you can forget Pete Carroll or Meyer ever being head coaches in the NFL....

"For Carroll and Meyer, the NFL window of opportunity has slammed shut. That's not to say they won't ever have those jobs. It's also not to say they even want those jobs. But the dream scenarios -- huge paydays and total control of an NFL franchise -- are off the table."

http://www.latimes.com/sports/la-sp-...42,full.column

For the time being this is a solid point... unless an owner would want to kick in a portion of the franchise (ha!) - so the Times point is valid in our current economy. Now if things change in 4-5 years we could revisit this. Meyer is likely never to go to the NFL anyway... if anywhere he goes to Notre Dame as mentioned.

THIS IS THE WIERDEST THING I HAVE SEEN... EVER???

faniq.com has the photos. A whacko dressed in a killer bee outfit holding two huge fake syringes.. chasing down lance armstrong... during the race in California...

Seriously this is... just so stupid and wrong. I wish I could grab the photos rather than have you click-link to them, but it is worth the click!

Told you it was worth the click!

WHO'SE #1?

Gary Parrish, writing on sportsline.com - fires away about the new college basketball poll.

"Pittsburgh, you may now proceed to the top of the national rankings.

That's the end result of a wild Saturday... It's the only logical move, so much so that I imagine Pitt will get all 72 first-place votes in the AP poll and all 31 in the Coaches poll. Anything short of that will be proof that somebody with a vote isn't paying attention, and if such a person presents himself (or herself), that person will be Poll Attacked on Monday afternoon.... that makes Jamie Dixon's team the easy No. 1.

Any other opinion is a faulty opinion."

http://www.cbssports.com/mcc/blogs/e...71764/13706174

OK Gary, time to "Poll Attack" the guy who started the current coaches poll and got the polls to expand from 20 to 25 teams.... soooo.. I know just a little about college football and basketball polls.

I might put Pitt #1... but....

It's not that simple.

I might well vote for Oklahoma. Since they lost to Texas, but did so on the road with their star player (and college POY I might add) on the bench and able to produce a whopping 2 points. They also darn near won the game. If we learned anything nationally about the Sooners in that loss... it's that they are a very good TEAM.

Is Pitt #1, yeah likely. Is it a slam dunk and anyone who votes for Oklahoma guilty of a 'faulty opinion'? No.

So Gary, your opinion is thus the faulty one.

COLLEGE SPREAD OFFENSE MAKINIG NFL DRAFT A CRAPSHOOT

from Don Banks story on si.com

"It gets more difficult with the evolution of the spread offense,'' Steelers director of football operations Kevin Colbert said. "The things they're doing in college, most of it won't transfer to the NFL. So you're really looking for physical characteristics, the footwork, the arm strength, some of the decision-making. You're trying to take some of the spread part out of it and maybe just take it to the point where the QB is getting ready to throw the ball. You see certain things in what he can do from that point on that may indicate what he can do to transfer to a more conventional offense.''

http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/200....html?bcnn=yes

And it won't get any better, if anything it might get worse. Georgia Tech's quasi-wishbone offense might well catch fire nationwide and have 12-15 teams running it in the next year or so. Unless the NFL can convince college football to change its rules (most notably moving the hashmarks in) it won't have much success altering the offenses that exist.

Best choice for the NFL? Move the pro hashmarks OUT. Allow for the spread offense and a wider sideline to sideline pro game. It would be more fun that way anyway.

29 YEARS AGO.. TODAY.

Do... you... believe?

It's hard to explain to someone not old enough to remember it when it happened. People running into the streets (literally) screaming their heads off.

* Jim McKay (ABC host) had the toughest job in the world that night. Because... the game was NOT ON LIVE TV! It was already... OVER.. and being tape-delayed (it was a different time before cable folks). And McKay knew what happened and he was live in studio tossing to each period and couldn't say!

* The commies were unbeatable.. they destroyed everyone (even the NHL's best) and would win games like 21-0.... Tretiak, Balderas, Myshkin... they were like watching a syncronized karate team.. in perfect lockstep shreading everything in their path... and then... to a bunch of rag tag kids?

* this was NOT the gold medal game. it was a semi-final. The US beat Finland for the gold.

* if you have never seen the movie "Miracle" (and how Kurt Russell doesn't win best actor for being Herb Brooks was beyond me..) well... get it for you and for the kids (it's PG) and it's tremendous... as good as it is.. it only gives you a sense of 1/10th of the impact of this event.

* I got to be in the Coke commercial (well in a way) as a fan at Jim Craig's first game as the Flames goalie in Atlanta (he won 3-0 over the Colorado Rockies) -- all of us with our American flags waving them... pretty cool.

UCONN HOOPS COACH SMACKS DOWN 'REPORTER'

Jim Calhoun is a tough SOB and when you are a gadfly faking his way into a post-game newser as a 'reporter' and then you challenge the HC on his annual salary... well... you get beat around like Mugsy Bouges posting up Shaq.

DEADSPIN CRACKS EMMITT HARDER THAN A LINEBACKER

On Emmitt Smith being dropped as an analyst by ESPN. Ouch.

"In a world where most people are forced by the Man to use such boring things as "proper syntax" and "words that exist", Emmitt boldly blazed his own trail through an alternate grammatical universe."

NBA IN CASH CRUNCH?

Sports Business Journal running with this...

The NBA is set to borrow $175 million Feb. 26, marking one of the first league financings since the implosion of the credit markets last fall. The money, which will be available to 15 teams, supplements an existing $1.7 billion leaguewide credit facility that uses the NBA’s media contracts as collateral to secure loans for the clubs.

full story link here..

http://www.sportsbusinessjournal.com/article/61537

The NFL re-structured its debt load not long ago and is set financially for the next 4 years (or so it says). The pressure is on everyone these days (except the Yankees, which is its own individual baseball player stimulus plan).

No word on the future of the cash the NBA needs for it's other properties (D league, WNBA, etc).

SOMETHING'S NOT KOSHER IN PRO TENNIS

02/18/09

From the "this should end well" file. Deadspin is linking that an Israeli tennis player has been cleared to play a pro tournament in Dubai.

As Deadspin puts it...

"the men's version of the Barclays Dubai Tennis Championship will take place next week and Andy Ram, also of Israel, will reportedly be allowed to enter the United Arab Emirates and will play. Hooray international peer pressure!"

link to full story here...

http://deadspin.com/5156527/visa-gra...-the-other-one

Here's the question, where are the Americans to boycott tournaments and events in any nation that discriminates against any athlete because of his... oh wait, religion doesn't count does it. If it were race that would be one thing... ah I get it.

And do you think the Emirates would be keen on a gay athlete? Just asking.

NEW COWBOYS STADIUM WILL BE NAMED.... "noonehasanymoneyforjerry.com stadium"

02/17/09

The Cowboys new stadium doesn't have a corporate sponsor, might not get one anytime soon either. So the Dallas Morning News has an idea that might work out, how 'bout a rather... charitible name?

http://www.dallasnews.com/sharedcont...1.2b44b1f.html

Actually, this is a pretty darn good idea. I would be thrilled if other teams adopted this model. But asking JJ to do something positive for someone other than himself? Ummmm, not so much.
